Velocity =

v = Q / A, where A = π × ID² / 4. Uses the pipe's inside diameter, not the nominal size.
Schedule 40 inside diameters per ASME B36.10M.
Common rule-of-thumb velocities: about 1–3 m/s (3–10 ft/s) for water-like liquids; much higher for gases. Project standards vary.
